About 200 inmates were rushed to corrections officers at a Southern California prison, and nine were hospitalized.
A violent break-in at Ironwood State Prison in Bryce, California, left eight correctional officers and an inmate injured, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Authorities said that as officers were escorting prisoners across the prison to search for contraband, “approximately 200 inmates in the yard lunged at the officers and attacked them with fists and stones.” announced.
Officers fired warning shots from their rifles, then used “chemical agents and non-lethal impact rounds” to subdue the prisoners.

Eight staff members and one inmate were treated at a local hospital and then returned to the prison, officials said.

Ironwood is a minimum-medium security facility in the desert east of Los Angeles that opened in 1994 and houses approximately 2,500 male inmates.
