9-Year-Old Witnesses Armed Robbery During Bank Visit

On July 13th, a memorable day unfolded for a young boy named Hunter in Arizona. This was the day he opened his very first checking account at Mesa Bank, accompanied by his grandmother, Colette.

According to reports, Hunter, a fourth-grader with glasses and blonde hair, had saved up nearly $200 from a week’s work at his grandparents’ home, prompting his grandmother to suggest he deposit the money in the bank.

However, what should have been a joyful occasion quickly turned into a frightening experience. While at the bank, Hunter noticed a masked individual entering. Instead of panicking, Hunter displayed remarkable bravery.

Colette recounted how, in a calm manner, Hunter tapped her on the shoulder. “The calmness of his demeanor was unreal. I turned my head and saw the teller pointing something at my head,” she said, only to realize it was a knife.

Hunter and his grandmother quickly sought refuge by hiding under a desk, where they couldn’t hear the robber’s demands. “I couldn’t hear anything. All I heard was Nana’s heavy breathing,” he remarked, revealing that his thoughts were on his hard-earned cash: $160 of his money and $27 in coins from Colette.

“If you lose it, $160 goes down the drain!” he told reporters.

The day took a positive turn when Mesa police apprehended a woman suspected of the robbery, charging her with armed robbery, aggravated assault, and disorderly conduct. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident.

The very next day, Hunter and his grandmother returned to the bank to open that checking account. Colette reiterated a significant lesson during their visit, stating, “We must not be guided by fear. We must face fear head-on.”

When asked about his first purchase with his new debit card, Hunter expressed his desire to buy his grandmother a new keyboard and perhaps save for a computer. His candid advice for potential bank robbers was simple: “Get a job.”
