For many men’s college basketball programs, dreams of playing in the NCAA Tournament have been dashed in recent days.
But that doesn’t mean their season is over.
The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) will be held again this year. Billed as the “Beginning of College Basketball,” the NIT is college basketball’s oldest and once most prestigious postseason tournament.
Over the years, the format of the NIT has evolved. Madison Square Garden in New York City was once the home of the final round, but the NCAA moved the NIT one season ago. Last year the tournament moved to Las Vegas, and the 2023 semifinals and championship game will be held at Orleans Arena. UNLV served as the host school last season.
Butler will be the host school this year, with the semifinals and championship game held at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Since 2017, each conference’s regular season champions have had to win the conference tournament to find a spot in the NIT. However, in October last year, the NIT board gave the eligibility process a chance. This season, the NIT has guaranteed two teams (based on NET rankings) from each of the Power 6 conferences (Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, Southeastern) a spot in his NIT field. Masu. The top two teams in each conference’s NET rankings that have not yet qualified for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament will be selected, regardless of win-loss record.
Additionally, the 12 teams automatically selected through this process will be guaranteed the opportunity to host a game in the first round of the NIT.
Once the 12 schools are selected for automatic eligibility, the NIT committee will select the best 20 teams available to complete the tournament’s 32-team field. Based on the NIT Committee’s evaluation, the top four of the 20 at-large teams selected will earn the 16 first-round hosting teams, honoring the “first four teams” of the NCAA Tournament. Additional teams from the six automatically eligible conferences are eligible to be selected as at-large teams and may be selected as hosts.
The first round will be held at the campus venue on March 19th and 20th, the second round on March 23rd and 24th, and the third round on March 26th and 27th. These games will also be held on campus. The 2024 NIT Semifinals are scheduled to be held on April 2nd at Hinkle Fieldhouse on ESPN (Semifinal Game 1) and ESPN2 (Semifinal Game 2), and the 2024 NIT Championship Game will be held on April 4th. The game will be held at Hinkle Fieldhouse and broadcast on ESPN.
The entire NIT will be broadcast on ESPN, and the games will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU, but first we need to find out who will be playing.
