A 6-year-old New Jersey girl has died from injuries sustained while playing badminton with her family on vacation in Maine. Just weeks before her tragic death, she asked a poignant question about God that her parents consider a “gift.”
Last week, Lucy Morgan and her family were enjoying their summer vacation at their “wonderful lakeside home” in Limerick, Maine. But on their last full day in Maine, the family vacation suddenly turned into a complete nightmare.
“We were having a quick lunch by the lake when the kids decided to play badminton in the front yard,” their father, Jesse Morgan, wrote in a blog post. New Creation Living Blog. “Bethany and I were relaxing in the back when we heard screaming.”
Tragically, Lucy was hit on the head by a broken badminton racket held by her 10-year-old brother.
He explained, “A freak accident occurred when the racket broke on a downward swing, sending a sharp shard through Lucy’s skull as she was sitting on the sideline, causing severe injuries. She was still breathing but unresponsive while I held her and Bethany cried out to God.”
The girl was rushed to a local hospital, but her injuries were so severe that she had to be transported by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
“On arrival she was quickly taken to the operating room where part of her skull was removed to relieve pressure and address her injuries,” Jesse said.
Doctors told her father that his daughter’s chances of recovery were “extremely slim” and she reportedly had no brain function and was only able to breathe on her own “occasionally.”
Four days after the accident, Lucy Morgan’s heart stopped and she died at around 4am on June 5th.
Lucy is survived by her father, her mother Bethany, her brother aged 10, her sister aged 8 and her brother aged 4.
Jesse Morgan, pastor of Green Pond Bible Chapel in Rockaway, New Jersey, found comfort in his young daughter’s strong religious beliefs.
Jessie said of her daughter, “Four weeks ago, she asked Bethany how she could be with God and be saved. Bethany explained it to her, and ‘Miss Independent’ Lucy wanted to do it herself. She went to her room, asked God for forgiveness and told him she believed in the death and resurrection of Jesus. What a gift!”
Morgan recalled a moment in the last adult Bible class she taught before a family vacation.
“I have been beating my chest for faith and I identify with this quote I quoted in that class,” he wrote, before going on to quote C.S. Lewis: “Knock, and it shall be opened to you.”But does knocking mean madly hammering or kicking at the door?
The grieving father also quoted Psalm 72:12-14:
He will deliver the poor who cry out, and the afflicted who have no one to help them; He will have compassion on the poor and the helpless; He will save the lives of the poor, and deliver them from oppression and violence, for their lives are precious in the sight of the Lord.
