Former Teacher Accused of Long-Term Sexual Involvement with Student
A New Jersey woman, previously a middle school teacher, is facing serious allegations of engaging in a sexual relationship with a student and subsequently “grooming, manipulating, and abusing” him over six years, as outlined by prosecutors during a bail hearing on Wednesday.
Ashley Fisler, now 36, reportedly had sexual encounters with the boy starting when he was just 12 years old. Prosecutor Kylie Finley claimed that Fisler continued to exchange explicit messages, which included sexting, even after the teenager expressed a desire for her to cease contact.
During the almost hour-long virtual hearing, Fisler appeared via video link from Salem County Jail, dressed in dark green prison garb, and only spoke to confirm her identity.
Finley noted that the inappropriate messages exchanged between Fisler and the student were alarming. These included gifting the teen sex toys, inquiring about his sexual experiences, and even suggesting he send her explicit photos. In a bid to keep her detained without bail, Finley mentioned that they had accumulated over 7,500 pages of text messages between Fisler and the boy. She added that while the two had shared explicit photographs, the evidence could not be retrieved by authorities.
Further details revealed that Fisler had also exchanged inappropriate messages with two other students, sharing photos of themselves in bikinis.
In defense of Fisler, her attorney, Rocco Ciparone, argued that she should not be considered a flight risk, given her marital status, home ownership, and family ties in the area. He contended that she posed no threat to other students since she had retired from teaching in 2023.
Ciparone also accused the prosecution of selectively presenting messages and claimed that there was insufficient evidence to support allegations of sexual assault against the boy.
The attorney further noted that many of the messages between Fisler and the student, which started when she was 16, were graphic yet indicated a level of maturity. “This isn’t a case of a naive child,” he stated.
Judge William Ziegler has expressed that a decision regarding bail will be made on Thursday morning.
