A New Jersey Transit train driver was killed and nearly 20 passengers were injured Monday when a train struck a fallen tree on the tracks, authorities said.

The fatal accident occurred around 6 a.m. on the River Line near Roebling Station outside Trenton.

“Earlier today, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was briefed on an accident on the New Jersey Transit River Line in which a light rail train collided with a tree on the tracks, killing the driver and injuring a passenger,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement. I wrote to X. .

“The investigation is ongoing. Our prayers are with everyone affected by this tragic incident,” he added.

“Of the 42 passengers on board, 23 sustained non-life-threatening injuries, most of which were minor,” New Jersey Transit told Fox News Digital.

“The train driver was pronounced dead. The remaining 19 passengers were taken to the bus. New Jersey Transit Police are on scene and investigating,” the spokesperson added.

At this time, it is unknown what caused the tree to fall onto the railroad tracks.

“River Line service remains suspended in both directions between Trenton and Florence stations due to a fallen tree crossing the tracks near Roebling. Alternative bus service is being provided,” NJ Transit said in a statement. I received this and wrote to X.
