Border Release and Enforcement Updates
President Trump’s administration announced on Thursday that there have been 15 consecutive months of releases occurring at the border.
According to Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin’s office, daily border apprehensions are now down by 94% in comparison to the prior administration and are at their lowest level in three decades.
“The results speak for themselves this month: President Trump’s border security agenda is restoring order and emphasizing the safety of American citizens,” Mullin expressed in a statement.
“The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) remains committed to enforcing immigration laws, securing the borders, and speeding up the removal of individuals who are in the country illegally. Due to President Trump’s strong leadership, our nation’s borders are the most secure we’ve ever seen,” he added.
Immigration Bill and Policy Changes
Seizures of contraband at the border reportedly increased by 26% in July when compared to the previous administration, with authorities confiscating substances like cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is also instrumental in carrying out President Trump’s tariff policies, having identified $23 billion in tariff collections just in July.
CBP Director Rodney Scott noted, “Clear policies, effective enforcement, and hardworking front-line staff are yielding positive results at the border.”
“With support from President Trump and Secretary Mullin, CBP is safeguarding our country from illegal immigration, guarding against dangerous individuals, and tackling the influx of illegal drugs, all while upholding lawful trade and travel. These successes demonstrate what’s achievable when border security is prioritized,” he remarked.
The Trump administration is actively working to enhance immigration enforcement. Recently, the House made strides toward enshrining some of President Trump’s immigration directives into law.
The proposed Trump Safe Borders Act aims to criminalize visa overstays, toughen penalties for illegal border crossing, effectively end catch-and-release policies for most undocumented immigrants, and tighten regulations about asylum claims and humanitarian parole.
The initiative also seeks to bolster CBP by directing DHS to modernize border facilities, expand staffing, and enhance surveillance capacities with technologies like drones, radar systems, biometric screenings, and even DNA collection.
