No evidence of arson discovered in case of fire at South Carolina judge's home

Over the weekend, a fire devastated the waterfront home of Judge Diane Schafer Goodstein and her husband, former state legislator Arnold Goodstein, in Edisto Beach, South Carolina. Witnesses say Arnold jumped from a window to escape the flames as first responders used kayaks to reach the burning structure.

Authorities are no longer considering arson as a cause of the fire, at least for now. However, the exact origin of the fire that destroyed the $1 million home remains unclear following a preliminary investigation. Judge Goodstein, 69, was reportedly walking the dog when the fire ignited. Unfortunately, her 81-year-old husband suffered a broken leg during his escape, and their son and grandchildren were also injured.

Mark Keel, head of the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Department (SLED), stated Monday, “At this point, there is no evidence that the fire was intentionally set.” He mentioned potential pre-fire explosions were also ruled out. Yet, the investigation continues, leaving many questions unanswered.

What Caused the Fire?

Despite initial suspicions of an explosion, authorities have found no proof that the fire resulted from malintent. The U.S. Fire Department attributes most residential fires to accidents, often linked to cooking, electrical issues, heating equipment, or careless behavior. As such, the exact cause here is still a mystery.

Did Threats Contribute?

Interestingly, Judge Goodstein had recently opposed the Trump administration in a voter registration case. On social media, New York Democrat Daniel Goldman raised concerns about whether political tensions were involved, wondering aloud if Trump’s supporters played a role in the unfortunate incident. Goldman, who previously impeached Trump, couldn’t be reached for immediate comment.

In response, Stephen Miller, a Trump ally, dismissed Goldman’s claims as baseless and offensive, while Keel reiterated that there were no indications of intentional wrongdoing behind the fire.

Casualties and Injuries

First responders faced an incredible challenge, with at least one person needing to be airlifted to a hospital. Arnold Goodstein reportedly broke both legs when he jumped to escape the flames, and further details on the injuries sustained by other family members remain scarce. Sadly, local reports also indicate that a family pet perished in the fire, adding to the tragedy.

Ongoing Investigation

As firefighters continue to assess the site, they are looking for signs of what may have caused the blaze. A full investigation, including potential forensic analysis of the debris, could take several months. Eyewitnesses have also captured footage from the air and water, contributing to the narrative surrounding this unfortunate event.
