Homeland Security Secretary Criticizes NYC Sanctuary Policies

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has openly criticized New York City Mayor Eric Adams over the city’s sanctuary policies.

Over the weekend, I was hanging out with friends at Fort Washington Park in Manhattan when an incident unfolded involving 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez and Christian Aibal Velour.

Nunez, identified as an undocumented immigrant with a significant criminal history, allegedly shot a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer during a robbery attempt.

Nunez, who is originally from the Dominican Republic, had previously been apprehended near San Luis, Arizona, after being allowed to re-enter the U.S. under the current administration. He has a pending arrest warrant in Massachusetts, as noted by Secretary Noem.

He sustained injuries after CBP officers returned fire and was subsequently taken into custody at a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, Ibar Velour, another undocumented individual from the Dominican Republic, was arrested the following morning.

Noem expressed her outrage, stating, “There is absolutely no reason why people like this scum should be roaming free in New York City.” She pointed out that Nunez had been arrested multiple times only to be released again, which, according to her, endangered the community due to the mayor’s policies.

She continued, “We managed to apprehend the second individual involved. He will face strong prosecution for his crimes.”

Noem also mentioned that Velour’s extensive criminal background was overlooked due to the city’s sanctuary status.

“He had previously been arrested for reckless endangerment and theft but was let go before ICE could detain him,” Noem remarked.

She urged mayors and leaders of sanctuary policies to reconsider their approaches, emphasizing their responsibility to protect their communities.

On another note, Tom Homan, former Border Patrol chief, shared his visit to the hospitalized officer, noting the emotional distress of the officer’s family during this tough time.

“When I saw the young officer, it was just gut-wrenching,” Homan said. “His family is heartbroken.”

“Sanctuary cities tend to harbor criminals. This will not be tolerated,” Homan commented.

In response, former President Donald Trump issued a statement, condemning the actions of Nunez and the city’s policies from the previous administration.

“Last night, an incredible CBP officer was shot by an illegal alien monster released under Biden’s policies,” Trump stated, voicing strong disapproval of how the situation has been managed.

“Democrats are allowing criminal elements to remain in our country, which poses a serious risk,” he concluded.
