Homeland Security Secretary Visits Shooting Victim
On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem visited the scene of a tragic shooting in New York City, where a customs border guard was killed during an attempted robbery that reportedly involved illegal immigrants. Noem criticized the local sanctuary policy believed to have contributed to the incident.
The victim, a non-service officer, was allegedly attacked while in Riverside Park on Saturday night. Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, a Dominican citizen, was apprehended after the shooting; he had been previously detained by border patrol in April 2023.
“There’s absolutely no reason why individuals like this should be roaming the streets of New York,” Noem stated to reporters, referring to Nunes. “He had been arrested multiple times in the city but was released due to the mayor’s policies.”
Noem mentioned that another suspect, identified as Christian Iver Bellore, who illegally entered the country in 2022, had also been detained. Bellore was reportedly ordered to be removed by an immigration judge in 2023.
Details of the Incident
According to Noem, both suspects had criminal backgrounds in New York. She claimed they had been able to avoid more serious consequences due to the city’s policies. Noem insisted that the system had failed to keep the public safe, stating, “Their job is to protect the community, not allow violent individuals to roam free.” The public should feel safe in their neighborhoods, she emphasized.
Witnesses to the shooting reported that the victim and another individual were sitting by the water when they were approached by two suspects on a scooter, leading to the confrontation. The border guard was shot in the arm and cheek but is currently in stable condition.
After visiting the injured officer, Noem expressed her condolences and support for his recovery, stating, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the officers and their families during this terrible time.” She reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring the safety of officers in the line of duty.
Noem called for a reevaluation of sanctuary policies, urging mayors and governors to change their approaches to law enforcement. She cited various cities, like Boston and Los Angeles, where similar policies led to chaos and unrest.
Mora Nunez, who had previously been in custody in Arizona, was released under the Biden administration despite facing serious charges. Critics argue this could have been prevented with stricter border policies.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott criticized the current administration’s border strategies, suggesting they directly contributed to the violence. White House border agents, who visited the injured officer, conveyed their shock and sorrow over the incident.
Mayor Adams described the situation as deeply concerning, as the suspect had an active warrant and was already involved in a pattern of violence. These circumstances have added further urgency to discussions about public safety in New York.
President Trump weighed in on the matter, expressing outrage over the attack and reiterating the need for strong law enforcement measures.
