Homeland Security Secretary’s Visit Amid Protests in Portland
On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem visited the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, where protests are ongoing in response to the administration’s immigration policies. During her visit, a video captured Noem meeting with local officials and offering prayers for the officers at the facility.
This visit followed a tense meeting with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek at the Portland Airport, as confirmed by the governor’s office. Kotek mentioned he had requested the visit after learning, through informal channels, about Noem’s potential trip to the city.
Kotek emphasized to Noem that there are “no riots in Oregon.” He pointed out that federal courts have previously confirmed that military deployments to Portland lack legal justification and underscored that local law enforcement could handle the situation adequately.
The governor has called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE to adhere to Oregon state laws while conducting federal operations. In his statement, Kotek reiterated his commitment to protecting Oregonians from military intervention and the negative implications of federal law enforcement tactics.
Shortly thereafter, Kotek’s office announced instructions to send home 200 members of both the Oregon and California National Guard, who had been deployed to Portland to secure federal properties.
This development occurred after a U.S. District Court judge, appointed by Trump, issued a temporary restraining order, effectively halting the military deployment in Oregon. The order was expanded to prohibit the federal government from sending troops into the state altogether.
Kotek mandated that all dispatched California National Guard members return to California.
As tensions continue, the Oregon National Guard will be in transition to Camp Lailea. Kotek remarked that the judge’s decision is a strong rebuttal to President Trump’s handling of the National Guard and emphasized that returning Oregon’s soldiers is a priority.
In closing, Kotek stressed the humanity of the National Guard members, stating that they are not just soldiers but neighbors and friends who should not be separated from their families and careers without just cause.
