Noem states that DHS and Secret Service are looking into Comey after he suggested the assassination of Trump.

Controversy Surrounds Comey’s Recent Post

Secretary of Homeland Security Christy Noem has accused former FBI director James Comey of suggesting the “assassination” of President Trump. She stated that federal law enforcement is currently looking into this “threat.”

“Disgraceful FBI Director James Comey called for the assassination of @potus Trump,” Noem posted on X on Thursday evening.

She added, “DHS and Secret Service are investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.”

Comey, who has had a tumultuous relationship with the current president, shared a photo on Thursday that sparked significant backlash from many within Trump’s supporter base, who interpreted it as inciting violence against Trump. Some others saw the number “86” in the post as an encouragement for the president to take action.

Later that evening, Comey removed the photo and clarified his intent in a new post, stating he had no intention of promoting violence and was surprised by how his message was received.

“I previously posted some husk photos I saw today on my beach walk, thinking it was political commentary,” Comey explained on Instagram.

“I didn’t realize that some might connect those numbers to violence,” he continued. “It never occurred to me, but I’m against all forms of violence, so I took down the post.”

A Secret Service spokesperson noted the agency is “examining what could be considered a potential threat to parents,” emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

“We take this responsibility very seriously and are aware of the social media post in question,” they said, adding that there would be no further comments on protection information.

FBI Director Kash Patel also addressed the controversy on Thursday, stating, “I know of a recent social media post by former FBI Director James Comey directed at President Trump.” He assured that communication with the Secret Service is ongoing and that the FBI would provide necessary support.

Comey has been openly critical of Trump since being fired from the FBI in 2017.
