A North Carolina high school teacher was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of sexually abusing a student, police said.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Brittney Marie Vernon, 39, was charged with three felony counts of lewd acts with a student and three felony counts of sexual battery with a student.
The shocking assault allegation against the Randleman High School teacher was first reported on July 1.
Police have not released details or said whether Vernon allegedly targeted multiple students, but said the charges are troubling enough to warrant the issuance of a warrant.
The sheriff also did not say whether the alleged victim was a Vernon student or how old he was.
The age of consent in North Carolina is 16 years old.
Vernon is a Career and Technical Education Teacher (CTE) in the high school health services department. According to the company’s webpage.
She will begin her teaching career at Randleman High School on Aug. 21, 2023, but has been part of the Randolph County school system since August 2018, the spokesperson said. He told WFMY2 News.
Vernon has since been suspended without pay.
She is being held on $75,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 12.
Randleman is a city of 4,600 people located 20 miles south of Greensboro.
