Missing North Carolina Mother Found After Over Two Decades
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — A mother of three from North Carolina, who vanished in 2001, has been photographed for the first time after her arrest last week for skipping a court date.
Michelle Hundley Smith, 62, was apprehended near the South Carolina border after authorities discovered an active warrant for her arrest connected to a drunken driving charge from November 2001—just a month before she disappeared while shopping for Christmas. According to reports, this was before things took a troubling turn.
In a newly released photo, she appears worn and emotional. It has been said, “I have been running away from my family and the law for 24 years.”
Her arrest came at the request of Rockingham County law enforcement, and she managed to post bail ahead of a court appearance scheduled for March 26.
This recent development follows the discovery of her whereabouts at an address in North Carolina just days earlier. “It’s been almost a quarter of a century since I left my husband and three children in Rockingham County,” she reflected.
Initially, she told her family that she was going Christmas shopping at a Kmart in Martinsville, Virginia. But she never returned, and despite extensive searches by various agencies, there was no trace of her.
According to Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page, Smith separated from her family over 24 years ago due to “ongoing domestic issues at the time.”
Her daughter, Amanda Smith, shared previously that her mother struggled with alcohol and had been dismissed from her job at a veterinary clinic for “drinking on duty.”
Despite there being no prior domestic reports or evidence of foul play, Amanda has emphasized her mixed feelings since her mother was found. “I’m ecstatic, I’m pissed, I’m heartbroken, I’m all over the map!” Amanda, now 38, expressed on social media recently.
