North Carolina’s Redistricting Fight

Republicans in North Carolina are now in a heated redistricting showdown involving President Donald Trump and Democratic lawmakers.

On Monday, they announced plans to alter the state’s congressional district map.

“We’re committed to protecting President Trump’s policies, which includes maintaining Republican control of Congress,”

Republican leaders asserted in a release that actions taken in California regarding redistricting led to this move. They aim to keep pace with Texas’s redistricting efforts.

Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger stated, “President Trump has seen many wins in his first term, and even now in his second term, he continues to achieve notable successes.” He emphasized that their efforts will ensure that North Carolina’s congressional maps are redrawn in October, preventing Governor Gavin Newsom from deciding the state’s legislative majority.

The chairs for house redistricting, Republicans Brenden Jones and Hugh Blackwell, voiced their support, declaring, “We’re stepping into this fight because California and the radical left are manipulating the process to select their preferred candidates.” They insisted that North Carolina would not remain passive in the face of these tactics, rallying behind Trump’s call to action.

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom responded shortly thereafter, criticizing the Republicans. “It’s just another Republican seeking to placate Trump,” he tweeted. “They’re attempting to manipulate the election while wrapping it in falsehoods. Americans aren’t fooled by this, Phil.” He mentioned that this started in Texas and warned that if North Carolina gives in, the movement will carry on in California.

In related news, New York’s Democratic Party has expressed a desire to redistrict, but they may be too late to impact the upcoming 2028 election.

“You have to fight fire with fire,” noted New York Governor Kathy Hochul, recently. “Another saying fits here: ‘All’s fair in love and war.’ That’s why I’m working with leaders to look into the options for quickly reshaping the Legislature.”
