Concerns Raised Over Locker Room Policy at North Carolina High School
In a North Carolina high school, students are expressing discontent regarding the treatment of a transgender classmate alleged to have been in the girls’ locker room, apparently watching a female student change.
Cox Mill High School, located in Concord, has faced backlash after the principal at the time stated the situation was “too political to address,” as cited in a complaint submitted by America First Legal (AFL), a conservative advocacy group.
The complaints, which were made by students and parents to local school authorities, include a notable one from student Trista Luck at a public hearing with the Cabarrus County School Board last December. She articulated her concerns, stating, “There’s a biological male on a football or basketball cheer team who dresses and acts like a woman. That’s not the problem. The problem is when he dresses and undresses in the women’s locker room and uses the women’s restroom.”
Luck recounted what a teammate experienced during a spring sports practice, mentioning that while changing, the classmate had noticed the transgender individual watching her and other girls, which made her feel “very uncomfortable.”
During the same hearing, Luck read a response from former principal Chris Myers, who mentioned that there was “nothing we could do” and advised the girls to “go elsewhere” if they were uncomfortable.
Luck shared that he personally “tried to avoid the restroom at all costs,” accusing the school’s administration and athletic director of “blatantly ignoring our concerns.”
Following these incidents, the School Board announced Myers’ resignation ten days later.
In light of these events, the AFL has submitted complaints to both the Department of Education and the Department of Justice, urging an investigation into the school district’s actions, which they argue may have breached Title IX guidelines against sex discrimination.
AFL senior adviser Ian Prior emphasized, “Girls should never be forced to sacrifice their privacy, safety, and dignity because school officials are afraid to tell the truth about their biological sex.” He further stated that federal authorities need to investigate and ensure compliance with federal laws rather than adhere to “woke ideology.”
Concerns from parents regarding transgender students’ access to girls’ facilities at the high school had been raised as early as 2024. However, school administrators at the time indicated they had “no specific policy” and would align with the Biden administration’s interpretation of Title IX, which includes prohibitions against discrimination based on “gender identity.”
The AFL concluded that allowing biological males into female intimate spaces, such as restrooms and locker rooms, contributes to a hostile educational environment.
Neither Cabarrus County Schools nor current principal Megan Frazier has responded to requests for comments regarding this matter.
