Stein expressed his heartbreak over Zarutska’s death, describing it as a “meaningless act of violence.” He mentioned his commitment to improving public safety by advocating for increased funding to hire better-trained police officers. “I’m urging the Legislature to pass recruitment and retention measures to fill vacancies in our law enforcement agencies,” he stated, emphasizing the need to stop violent crimes and hold offenders accountable.

The incident occurred on August 22, while Zarutska was traveling on the Lynx Blue Line. The release of surveillance footage sparked significant outrage on social media, highlighting her tragic fate.

Governor’s Silence and Controversy

Many criticized Stein for his previous attention to the death of George Floyd but his lack of response regarding the murder of a white woman by a black assailant. Journalist Megan Basham pointed out his double standards, noting that while he condemned Floyd’s death and advocated for a “Task Force for Racial Equality,” he failed to respond similarly here.

Some social media users expressed frustration over the apparent lack of urgency around Zarutska’s murder. John Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, described the lack of response from Democratic leaders as “outrageous,” especially given the suspect’s extensive violent criminal history.

The perpetrator, identified as DeCarlos Brown, was apprehended shortly after the attack. Reports indicate he has a long history of arrests. Authorities clarified that the two did not know each other and that the attack was random, further deepening the community’s concerns about public safety in Charlotte’s transportation system.
