North Korea Prepares for Political Conference Amid Missile Launches

North Korea is gearing up for a significant political conference, recently launching short-range ballistic missiles into its own territorial waters.

South Korea’s military reported that several ballistic missile launches were detected from an area northeast of Pyongyang, with each missile covering a distance of approximately 347 miles. Japan’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed that two missiles were launched and ended up off the coast of the Korean Peninsula.

This marks the first weapon launch from North Korea since a hypersonic missile test earlier in January. In December, the country conducted tests on a long-range strategic cruise missile and an anti-aircraft missile while also showcasing images of its first nuclear-powered submarine under construction.

Reports indicate that the missile launches occurred as North Korea’s ruling party gets ready for its first congress in five years. During these preparations, leader Kim Jong Un met with government officials to discuss the agenda, which aims to establish new political and economic priorities. This comes as the United States and South Korea seek to initiate new talks with North Korea.

North Korea’s state-controlled Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim held a meeting of the Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, where members discussed matters relating to the upcoming congress and the national policy for the year. Interestingly, Kim had reinstated the parliament in 2016 after a lengthy hiatus of 36 years.

On another note, North Korea recently accused South Korea of conducting surveillance drone flights across the border. In response, the South Korean government refuted these claims, stating that no North Korean drone was operating at the purported time and has opened an investigation to determine if a civilian drone might have crossed the border.
