North Korean hackers behind $1.5 billion crypto hack: Security firm

North Korean hackers were behind a sophisticated hack that stole around $1.5 billion worth of digital currency from BYBit, the major cryptocurrency exchange. Security Company TRM.

“TRM has determined that the Bybit Hack was made by a North Korean hacker,” the company's statement read Friday.

“This assessment is based on the substantial overlap observed between addresses controlled by bi-bit hackers and addresses linked to previous thefts of North Korea,” the statement continued.

TRM said the company can tag and track the movements of stolen $1.5 billion Ethereum tokens in real time.

Oka reached out to the FBI for comments.

North Korean provincial hackers have been linked to several overpass code thefts in recent years. In December, the FBI, the Department of Defense, and the National Police Agency of Japan issued a joint statement denounced hackers who denounced theft of $308 million from Japanese crypto companies.

Bybit said Friday that the routine transfer of Ethereum digital wallets was “manipulated” by an attacker who transferred the code to an unidentified address.

The company tried to reassure customers that the exchange's cryptocurrency holdings were secure. The company added that hack news has led to a surge in withdrawal requests and that it may be delayed in handling them.

Bibit CEO Ben Zhou said on social media that his company remains a solvent even if the hacked code has not been recovered.

“We can cover the loss,” he said.
