Oklahoma State Boosts Quarterback Position

Oklahoma State has taken a significant step in enhancing its quarterback scenario. Reports indicate that Drew Mestemaker, who topped all FBS college quarterbacks in passing yards while at North Texas this past season, is set to transfer to Oklahoma State next year.

Interestingly, Mestemaker’s commitment appears to come with a “two-year contract” valued at around $7 million, which seems linked to the NIL deal.

Having just wrapped up his freshman season with the Mean Green, Mestemaker will be reuniting with Eric Morris, his former coach at North Texas, who recently agreed to a five-year deal with Oklahoma State. This transition is seen as a positive one for both parties.

“The connection I built with Coach Morris there, along with Coach Brophy and the entire staff, really influenced my decision,” Mestemaker shared with ESPN. “I believe Coach Morris is one of the best play-callers out there. He has this great ability to help me feel comfortable as a quarterback and to tailor an offensive strategy that fits my style.”

He expressed confidence in Morris, noting, “I feel like he’s setting me up for success in every way.” Last season, Mestemaker threw for an impressive 4,379 yards, tallied 34 touchdowns, and achieved a 68.9% completion rate, guiding North Texas to a solid 12-2 record and a bowl win against San Diego State.

At just 20 years old, he is committed to supporting Morris during what he acknowledges will be a challenging transition for the Cowboys after a rough season, with a disappointing 1-11 finish and no wins in the Big 12.

Mestemaker is aware of the hurdles ahead, stating, “Coach Morris knows we have work to do, and he’s ready for it. We recognized the challenges last year. People doubted our chances of making a bowl game.” He remains optimistic about the staff’s determination, adding, “I know this team won’t back down from a challenge, both on offense and defense.”
