Northern Lights Caution Maine Patients About Stalled Talks with Anthem
If the agreement lapses, many patients could lose coverage
Northern Light Health, a major healthcare provider in Maine, has indicated that negotiations for a new contract with the insurance company Anthem are not progressing. The current agreement is due to end on September 30, 2025. Officials from Northern Light expressed that unless Anthem agrees to a suitable refund arrangement, the contract will not be renewed. They have noted that the existing contract fails to adequately cover patient care costs.
In the event of a contract expiration, all Northern Light services would become out of network for those with Anthem plans. Over the years, Anthem has mentioned rising care costs as a reason for increasing premiums paid by customers. However, the average increase in what Anthem pays annually is reportedly below 1.5%, while the expansion rate for health services exceeds 7.5% annually, according to Northern Light’s Chief Financial Officer, James Roberbaugh. “We need a refund of our services to keep hospitals, practices, and personnel operational,” he emphasized.
As Maine’s largest commercial insurer, Anthem has reportedly increased its profit margins in the state by nearly 10% in 2024, as detailed by Northern Light. The scenario leaves many patients wondering what their future healthcare options might look like if an agreement isn’t reached.
