Europe’s three left-wing governments have announced that they will formally recognize Palestine as a state later this month, infuriating Israel, who says it rewards terrorism.
Norway, Ireland and Spain said they would break with Western norms and join countries around the world, including Russia and China, in recognizing Palestine as a state. This change will become official on May 28th.

Belgium, Malta and Slovenia, among others, declined to join Tuesday’s declaration, although Norway is believed to be one of them.
Europe is already deeply divided over the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel and its consequences, and the divergent reactions to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) announcement this week that it would seek an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underscored those differences. Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz accused countries that had given in to Hamas’ demands to now accept their demands in order to retaliate for Hamas’ terrorism. He writes: “Israel will not remain silent in the face of those who undermine its sovereignty and threaten its security. Today’s decision sends a message to Palestinians and the world that terrorism is profitable. …These countries chose to reward Hamas and Iran by recognizing a Palestinian state.”
Katz said Norway, Ireland and Spain supported Hamas, thwarting efforts to return Israeli hostages and hurting hopes for peace.
