‘Not Going to Happen,’ We Define Ourselves As ‘Not American’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday on CNN's “The Read” that Canada will never be part of the United States, adding that Canadians consider themselves “not Americans.” .

Host Jake Taper, referring to former President Jimmy Cater's funeral, said, “President-elect Trump just got you in a bit of trouble by calling Governor Trudeau talking about making Canada the 51st state.'' Did you have any interaction with him today?

“No, not today, but that won't happen. Canadians are incredibly proud to be Canadian. One of the easiest ways we define ourselves,” Trudeau said. One is, “Well, we're not Americans.” It doesn't really matter because there is such a deep sense of pride. ”

He added, “What's happening here is that President Trump, who is a very skilled negotiator, is taking people out of the conversation around 25% tariffs on oil, gas, electricity, steel and aluminum. It's a distraction,” he added. If he moves forward with these tariffs, everything American consumers buy from Canada will suddenly become much more expensive. And that's something I think we need to focus on a little bit more. ”
