Recently uncovered note cards from the Biden administration list names and images of prominent Democrats, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Documents obtained highlighted these cards, often utilized by the president during public engagements for quick reference.
During an examination of national archives related to Biden’s use of autopens, five small “palm cards” were found. These cards are commonly used by politicians to remember talking points while campaigning. Four out of the five cards bore the stamp “The President saw it,” except for one that noted a question posed to Biden at a press conference.
It’s still unclear how heavily Biden relies on these cards during live events.
Clinton was notably awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom while Biden was in office. One of the cards details the recipients of this honor, including a brief biography and photo of Clinton alongside another high-profile medalist, actor Denzel Washington.
Another palm card mentioned an upcoming speech regarding judicial confirmations, featuring images of Senate leaders Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin, and confirmed Biden’s achievement of appointing 235 judicial candidates during a state dining room speech.
A former staff member indicated that compiling bios and notable names was standard practice, perhaps to keep the president informed on who was present at events.
One card specifically focused on Francis Ford Coppola’s family ahead of a major award ceremony, while another had a timestamp from January 18, featuring details about historical figures connected to the White House, including White House Historical Society President Stewart McClaurin and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
A handwritten note card also contained a question from ABC News reporter Mary Bruce during a joint press conference, which brought up Biden’s views on his place in history and the current political landscape.
During the event, Biden did acknowledge Bruce’s question and addressed ongoing concerns about his age as he ventured into his reelection campaign. Polls showed that a significant portion of Americans, including many Democrats, had reservations about his candidacy.
In past press conferences, Biden has frequently referred to palm cards, as seen in interactions with various media personalities. However, such reliance on these aids has sparked discussion about his cognitive abilities.
The White House has maintained that it doesn’t pre-screen questions or provide reporters with palm cards for speeches, stressing transparency in communication. Nonetheless, Biden’s use of auto-signing devices for official documents has raised eyebrows, particularly as critics claim it reflects on his mental acuity.
Biden’s approach, including the utilization of autopens, has drawn scrutiny, especially as the 2024 election approaches, making his responses under the spotlight even more critical.
