The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) recently expressed their views on an AI-generated video involving Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). The video, which has sparked some controversy, appears to show Schumer praising the government shutdown, though his actual comments were taken out of context.
This AI-created clip was shared on the platform X, with Schumer depicted smiling as he speaks. Following this, a montage plays, showcasing various news snippets that include military personnel at food banks and scenes of an air traffic control tower being closed. Additionally, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is shown claiming that Democrats aim to shut down the government to promote “free government health care for illegal aliens,” an assertion that many consider misleading.
The video concludes with a voiceover reiterating, “The Schumer shutdown is making things worse across America, and Democrats love it.” Schumer’s remarks seem to stem from an interview referenced by Punch Bowl News on October 9, in which he stated, “That’s because we’ve been thinking about this for a long time… their whole theory was that they could intimidate us and we would submit within a day or two.”
Joanna Rodriguez, Communications Director for the NRSC, defended the video on X, stating, “AI is here and it’s not going anywhere. Adapt and win, or pearl clutch and lose.” She further added, “Senate Democrats have voted 10 times to keep the government shut down. The consequences are tangible: unpaid salaries, staff shortages, a benefits crisis. It’s all ‘good’ for Chuck.”
AI videos have been employed in the ongoing battle between Democrats and Republicans regarding the government shutdown even before the process officially began. Former President Trump also shared a fabricated AI video of Schumer and Senate Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries that portrayed Jeffries in a sombrero and handlebar mustache, with Schumer asserting, “The Democratic Party is losing voters because of woke trans bulls.” Jeffries labeled the video as racist, challenging Trump to confront him personally about it.
On another note, over the weekend, the official Department of Transportation (DOT) account on X introduced an AI-generated mockup portraying Schumer and Jeffries in Disney princess attire in front of Cinderella Castle, meant to satirize the “No Kings” protests. The White House’s account later reshared this post with the caption, “No Kings!!”
In addition to the shutdown discussions, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has also utilized AI-generated content to poke fun at the Trump administration. On October 2, his office released an image blending Trump’s features with those of Marie Antoinette. Shortly after, they posted another image with Newsom alongside a statue of Christopher Columbus, both adorned with sunglasses, echoing imagery previously shared by the White House in relation to Columbus Day.
