Sutter Health Settlement Announcement
Sacramento, California. – A class action lawsuit against Sutter Health has led to a substantial settlement of $228.5 million. This outcome could benefit numerous Bay Area residents who had health insurance between 2011 and 2021.
The lawsuit, which targets the Northern California healthcare provider, claims that Sutter Health employed “anti-competitive” practices through unfair contract terms with insurance companies. These actions allegedly resulted in inflated premiums for members of the public.
As per the claims webpage for the case, it’s stated that the plaintiffs contend these arrangements caused insurance plans to overcharge for hospital services, leading to increased costs for both individuals and businesses. The site encourages eligible claimants to apply for payment.
Who is Eligible to File a Claim?
The management firm handling the class action, JND Legal Management, has outlined certain requirements for eligibility. Essentially, individuals who paid health insurance premiums are covered, particularly those living or working in specific counties in California.
- Alameda
- Contra Costa
- San Mateo
- Sonoma
- Marin
- San Francisco
- Napa
- Solano
Eligibility extends to anyone who either lived in or worked in one of those counties during the relevant period, specifically paying premiums from January 1, 2011, to March 8, 2021.
In terms of legal proceedings, the US District Court for the Northern District of California has given initial approval for the settlement to avoid further litigation. Sutter Health has denied any wrongdoing, though it has agreed to the settlement terms.
A court hearing is set for November 6, where the final approval of the settlement will be discussed, including any appeals. If the settlement is finalized, Sutter Health will need to pay $228.5 million and revise its operational practices.
