Nvidia Has Broken the Record for Stock Buybacks

Nvidia has taken a significant step by approving a $150 billion increase to its share repurchase program, reflecting the ongoing success of the artificial intelligence sector for the company.

This new authorization surpasses Apple’s previous record of $110 billion in buybacks, making it the largest ever for a corporate share repurchase initiative, as reported. Following this announcement, Nvidia’s shares saw an increase of nearly 2%.

The company’s board has now given the green light to invest up to an additional $150 billion in buying back its own shares over an extended period.

Nvidia had already been actively repurchasing its stock, having bought around $39.8 billion worth of shares in the first half of fiscal 2027. This included approximately $19.7 billion during the second quarter, according to their latest filing.

During the second quarter, Nvidia returned a record $26 billion to shareholders, with around $20 billion coming from share repurchases and $6 billion from dividends, as highlighted in their earnings call.

Share buybacks are a common strategy used to reduce the number of outstanding shares, which can enhance earnings per share by distributing profits across fewer shares. Furthermore, they provide a means for returning surplus cash to shareholders without permanently increasing dividend payouts.

Nvidia has also experienced remarkable revenue growth driven by the global AI infrastructure demand. They reported $96.2 billion in revenue for the second quarter, a 106% increase from the previous year, while revenue from data centers hit $89 billion.

It’s noteworthy that Nvidia’s quarterly revenue was only in the single-digit billions at the start of fiscal 2023. By fiscal 2025, however, it had risen to the tens of billions, and now they are nearing $100 billion in sales on a quarterly basis.

Apart from its ongoing success with processors for AI, Nvidia introduced its Open Agent Safety Platform, aimed at securing autonomous AI agents throughout their development and deployment phases.

This platform features Nvidia OpenShell, which adds layers of security and privacy controls around these autonomous agents.
