Nvidia CEO Joins Advisory Board of Beijing University

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has reportedly accepted a position on the advisory board of Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management in Beijing. This move appears to be part of his strategy to strengthen ties with China, even amid the complex political landscape shaped by the previous U.S. administration’s approach to the country.

Huang, who is 63, will contribute to a board that includes other prominent figures like Tim Cook, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Jamie Dimon. Tsinghua University is highly regarded in China, famous as the alma mater of President Xi Jinping.

The university has an established reputation for fostering connections with the U.S. technology and finance sectors. It’s interesting, isn’t it? The table of influential figures supporting this board really underscores the importance of maintaining a bridge between these two major economies.

Representatives from Nvidia and Tsinghua University did not respond to inquiries regarding Huang’s new role.

Interestingly, Laura Loomer, a figure closely associated with former President Trump, voiced strong objections to Huang’s appointment, calling it a “national security threat.” In a post, she highlighted Huang’s previous involvement with Trump’s Science and Technology Advisory Council, suggesting Tsinghua plays a significant role in cultivating leadership within China.

In response, Senator Jim Banks from Indiana mentioned they would investigate further into the matter.

Despite the existing restrictions on selling high-powered chips to China, recent actions by the Trump administration have allowed for some relaxation regarding less powerful technologies, given that certain criteria are met. Huang has been advocating for more lenient export controls, expressing the significance of the Chinese market for Nvidia.

As of now, Beijing has yet to approve Nvidia’s sales, even as the company aims to enhance domestic chip manufacturing within the country. In a recent appearance on CNBC, Huang mentioned, “We’re very happy to be able to contribute to the market. We have many customers and partners there. And we’ve been active for 30 years.”
