NYC building widow breaks over high winds causing glass to strike a 9-year-old girl below

A 9-year-old girl and her male relative were hit by falling glass in an eight-story apartment building in Queens as high winds battered the Big Apple on Monday night.

Police said glass shattered on a child and a man on the sidewalk beneath a high-rise building, sending both children to the hospital.

Police said the horrifying scene occurred around 6:10 p.m. when a glass panel came loose from the balcony area of ​​an apartment building and fell several stories onto Beach Avenue below.

The two victims did not have lacerations or other serious injuries, but were taken to North Shore Hospital for evaluation, the NYPD said.

Police sources said the girl and the 45-year-old man she was with were related.

Photos from the scene showed broken glass on the sidewalk as emergency responders from the city's Department of Buildings surveyed the damage.

Winds in the city were gusting about 15 miles per hour Monday night into Tuesday, with gusts as high as 30 miles per hour, forecasters said.
