NYC cold case suspect Ahmet Gashi suspect killed boxer Kemal Kolenovic outside Bronx bar: NYPD

A man previously sought in connection with the death of a professional welterweight boxer in the Bronx on New Year's Eve 2006 was arrested and charged with murder Friday, the New York City Police Department announced.

Police say Ahmet Gashi, 42, of Kosovo, Serbia, ran over professional boxer Kemar Kolenovic, then 28, with his Mitsubishi SUV outside a bar on Belmont Avenue in the Fordham section of the Bronx. I have doubts.

Kolenovic, from Montenegro, died after a fight with Gashi and two other men at the bar spilled onto the street outside, police said.

Police said the suspect jumped into the driver's seat of the car, drove onto the curb and struck the men who were arguing.

Instead, Kolenovic, who wasn't even involved in the dispute, was hit and crashed into a tree, hitting his head. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The driver of the car fled and escaped retaliation for this heinous act.

Police initially tried to question Mr Gashi in connection with his death, but the suspect fled to the Balkans and has been missing for 18 years.

He arrived at Central Booking in the Bronx on Friday night.
