New York Socialist Party Candidate Daria Lisa Avila Chevalier Faces Scrutiny Over Marxist Tweets
Democratic Socialist Daria Lisa Avila Chevalier has attracted significant attention recently due to a deleted tweet in which she expressed admiration for Marxism. This situation has prompted contemporary party leaders, like Senator John Fetterman, to question the Democratic Party’s increasing leftward tilt.
Avila Chevalier, with backing from New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), previously managed a Twitter account under the name Dalializabonnet until its deletion in June 2022. In her posts, she described Karl Marx as essential reading and criticized the scarcity of Marxist literature in libraries. Notably, she quoted Assata Shakur, who is known for her involvement in a controversial incident with law enforcement.
In one of her retweets, Avila Chevalier remarked, “I can’t get over the fact that the universe has literally been a perfect depiction of every failure of capitalism. I feel like people still can’t be communists because they don’t have enough soup.” This provocative statement, among others, has led to heightened criticism from both conservatives and moderates in various media outlets.
Senator Fetterman voiced concerns about the Democratic Party’s image, stating during a Fox News appearance that, “Our party has become a socialist orgy.” His comments have sparked further debate regarding the ideological direction of Democrats. Additionally, Eyal Jacoby, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, pointed out just how radical Avila Chevalier truly is.
Interestingly, CNN political commentator Scott Jennings remarked on the frequent assertion that socialism and communism are distinct ideologies, which adds a layer of complexity to the conversation surrounding Avila Chevalier’s views.
Moreover, as Avila Chevalier, who recently triumphed over incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th Congressional District, prepares for the general election, she remains a focal point for political discourse. Many anticipate that she will overcome her Republican contender in this strongly Democratic area in November.
Despite her controversial history and the backlash over her statements, Avila Chevalier’s position continues to evolve within the party landscape, raising questions about how Democratic leaders will respond to these challenges.
