NYC councilwoman: Jewish voters are 'terrified' of Mamdani becoming mayor

Concerns Over NYC Mayoral Candidate Mamdani

A Republican council member in New York City, Inna Vernikov, expressed to Fox News Digital that constituents in her predominantly Jewish district are alarmed about the possibility of socialist Zohran Mamdani becoming the next mayor. She described voters as feeling “pettish” regarding his candidacy.

Vernikov stated, “This is someone who wants to globalize Intifadas.” She emphasized the significance of the Jewish community in the city, asserting that many might consider leaving New York if Mamdani wins. “It’s unprecedented for those who’ve contributed so much to the city to feel unsafe here,” she added.

Mamdani has faced criticism due to his perceived anti-Israel stance, which some trace back to his college days when he was involved with the Palestinian branch for justice. Recent comments—involving the phrase “globalize intifadas”—have been met with backlash, though he reportedly discourages its use now.

The spotlight is also on Mamdani’s father, Mahmoud, who has been criticized for his social media posts that support a “Third Intifada.” Mamdani, when questioned about being labeled a “Communist” while navigating New York streets, chose not to respond.

Vernikov conveyed serious concerns within the Jewish community, remarking, “Intifadas call for violence. We know the innocent lives lost in those conflicts.” She indicated a growing fear among her community members regarding what a Mamdani mayorship could entail.

As Mamdani’s candidacy progresses, various Jewish organizations have voiced strong opposition to his campaign. Human rights attorney Brooke Goldstein recently expressed her concerns regarding his potential leadership.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comment on these issues.

Vernikov also framed the situation in a broader context, critiquing the reluctance of some Democrats to denounce Mamdani’s positions. “I wonder if this candidate were associated with extremist views against other groups would the support be the same?” she pondered, displaying frustration at what she sees as double standards in political backing. “It’s hypocritical and unacceptable,” she concluded, highlighting a perceived lack of accountability among those supporting him.
