NYC dad dies of apparent medical episode after duo pummels, robs him of chain inside private cab: cops

A Brooklyn father died Tuesday night in the back seat of a private taxi from an apparent medical condition. According to police, a violent duo had just beaten him and robbed him of his chain.

Authorities say Michael Sheronczyk, 53, was riding in a taxi on Neptune Avenue near West 5th Street in Brighton Beach around 6 p.m. when two robbers swarmed his car and opened the door. He allegedly started punching her in the face and head.

They then ripped the chain from his neck and bolted it, police said.

Police and sources said Sheroncik asked the driver to take him home, but appeared to get sick on the way at Y Street and East 3rd Street.

The man was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he died, police said.

Sheroncic, a Brooklyn native, left behind two grieving daughters, including Taylor, 27, and told the Post she never imagined something so tragic would happen to her father.

“This is crazy. I've lived in New York my whole life,” Taylor said. “I was born and raised here…I've never experienced anything like this before. My father was born and raised here.”

“He knew the city like the back of his hand. I never imagined something like this would happen to him in his life.”

Taylor described her father as “the kind of father every girl dreams of having.”

“It may sound cliché, but it’s true,” she said. “I feel like we only hear stories about these kinds of people because only good people die young. He was everything to us. He did everything for us. He was the only provider, the only emotional rock, the only everything.”

Police said Sheronczyk suffered a medical attack after the robbery and died at the hospital. Facebook/Michael Sheronczyk

“I'm 27 years old and I was scared to leave my house because I felt like I couldn't be without him,” Taylor added. “We do everything together. We eat every meal together, we go grocery shopping together, we go to doctor's appointments together, we do everything as a unit.”

“We all have the same doctors. We all have the same things. We're very close. We don't have extended families. It's just us and my grandmother, so , we kind of do everything together.”

Sheroncic had a passion for music, especially “rock and soul and Motown,” and sold CDs wholesale, his daughter recalled.

Taylor said she was inspired by her father and will never forget his “silliness, humor, laughter and the silly little jokes he told.”

“I will miss him even more…words cannot describe this,” she added. “I was just telling my grandma, I don't know how to live without him. He's my life. He taught me everything I know.”

“It’s because of him that I talk the way I do. I walk the way I do because of him. I talk the way I do because of him. It's like they took the crutches out from under me and I just broke my leg and I have to learn how to walk.”

Taylor made a desperate plea to Mayor Eric Adams to stop the violence.

“This has to stop,” she said. “I don't know what I have to do, but I have to do something. Whatever you're doing now, do the opposite.”

Meanwhile, Taylor's 20-year-old sister Lexi stood there looking somber, barely able to collect her thoughts.

“I have no words right now,” she said. “There’s a lot to absorb.”

A male neighbor who has lived on the block for more than 10 years said he didn't know the family well but often saw Sheroncic “coming out of the house and talking to friends.”

“New York is crazy right now. It's crazy, crazy,” he said. “You never want anything bad to happen to anyone, especially if it's your neighbor. It's just unfortunate.”

“Even seeing a dead animal makes you sad, but can you imagine this? Especially when you know it could have been prevented,” the neighbor added. “That's terrible, that's terrible.”

The cause of Sheronczyk's death is under investigation by the city medical examiner's office.

Surveillance video released Wednesday by the NYPD shows two hooded and masked robbery suspects, still at large, walking around on the sidewalk.
