A New York City deli has started selling a new hero sandwich called the “NYPD” to raise money for the family of police officer Jonathan Diller, who was shot and killed in the line of duty last week.
Joe DiGangi, owner of Mario’s Meat Market and Gourmet Deli in Queens, said the public response has been “amazing” and hopes to raise more than $40,000.
“It’s not just local people who come to buy Heroes. We have people calling from all over the country and saying that if there’s a police officer who paid for Heroes and came shopping, we’ll give them a free lunch. Some people,” he said Tuesday on “Fox & Friends First.”

Made with $5 from “NYPD” sandwich sales – The chicken cutlets, prosciutto, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and arugula with balsamic glaze will be given to Mr. Diller’s widow, Stephanie, and his almost 1-year-old son, Ryan.
The sandwich’s release was announced Monday, with City Councilman Robert Holden, D-Queens, holding a press conference, according to the New York Post.
Holden, who attended Diller’s funeral on Saturday, said she cried and praised DiGangi for doing something to make a difference. He said others in the district also want to do their part to help.

“We want to help the police,” he said.
DiGangi said she wanted to keep her efforts to support the family “low-key”, but the move went viral on social media over the weekend.

“Crime in the city has just gotten out of control and someone really has to do something,” he said.

Former President Donald Trump attended Thursday’s vigil last week and offered his condolences to the slain police officer. The New York Mets also paid tribute to Diller during Friday’s home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, with players from both teams observing a moment of silence as they lined up along the baseline.
