A radical teachers group has rallied New York City public school students, urging them to go on strike in light of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
The strike, organized by Decision Rising Up and Moving (DRUM), the Palestinian Youth Movement, Teachers Unite, the New York City Association of Palestinian Educators, Al-Auda New York and Movement for More, instructed students to walk out of their classrooms and march to Tweed Court on Chambers Street, which now serves as the Ministry of Education headquarters, at 3 p.m. on Friday.
“High school students have spoken out: they want a free Palestine from the river to the sea,” Teachers Unite New York said in an Instagram post.

Anti-Israel groups provided students with toolkits outlining “sample strike plans” and explaining students’ “rights” to protest.
Organizers said the rally was to protest “Israeli genocide of Palestinians.”

“On Friday, May 31, high school students across New York City will walk out of school to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to U.S. support for the Israeli genocide of Palestinians,” the toolkit states.

Education Minister David Banks tried to thwart the planned protests on Thursday, writing that strikes were unnecessary.

“I’m a big believer in student voice and kids standing up for what they believe in, and I don’t think we need to continue the strike to do that,” Banks told reporters.
