NYC jail guard injured after body camera catches fire

A New York City Department of Corrections inspector suffered burns and smoke inhalation when his body camera suddenly caught fire, and the department has suspended the use of the device pending an investigation.

The captain was on duty at the Rikers Island prison last Friday when a camera he was wearing caught fire without warning, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Anais Morales said.

The captain, whose name has not been released, was treated at a hospital for burns and smoke inhalation, Morales said.

“The safety of our staff is our top priority, and we are monitoring all body-worn cameras out of an abundance of caution while we investigate how and why this incident occurred,” Corrections Commissioner Lynell McGinley-Liddy said in a statement. We will stop using it.”

Officials said this is the first time a body camera has ignited a fire since the department began using body cameras in 2015.
