NYC Mayor Mamdani labels ICE as ‘out of control’ and advocates for its elimination

Immigration judge orders deportation of NYC Council worker, causing city outrage

Mayor Critiques ICE Amid Concerns Over Safety

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani expressed strong criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Friday, calling the agency “corrupt” and “reckless,” and suggesting it should be abolished. This statement comes as concerns rise over the city’s handling of illegal immigration, particularly following the tragic death of an elderly Air Force veteran on the subway.

During a press conference where he unveiled new street safety measures, the mayor mentioned discussions with President Donald Trump regarding immigration enforcement in the city. He described ICE as a “rogue agency” that operates without accountability.

“We have made it clear that no one is above the law in this city, and everyone must abide by the rule of law,” Mamdani stated. He reiterated his belief that ICE is not helping to enhance public safety in any meaningful way.

He went on to say that too many New Yorkers are living in fear of normal immigration checks, and mentioned the need to end the impunity with which federal agencies operate.

Mamdani continues to show support for protests against the Trump administration, endorsing events like the “No Kings New York City” protests that are scheduled for Saturday in Manhattan. “I think rallies are a valuable way for New Yorkers to come together and share their vision for our city and country,” he noted. He emphasized that these gatherings are crucial for reinforcing a sense of community among those who oppose ICE’s presence in the city.

Mamdani also remarked that rallies can help individuals recognize they are part of a larger push to restore decency and humanity in political discourse.

Interestingly, reporters did not ask the mayor about the recent incident involving Richard Williams, an 83-year-old veteran who was fatally pushed onto subway tracks by an undocumented immigrant from Honduras. Mamdani has yet to publicly address this incident.

Inquiries about whether Byron Posada Hernandez, the accused, would be handed over to ICE were referred to the Department of Corrections (DOC). A spokesperson explained that the agency processes detainees based on local laws that govern cooperation with ICE.

According to city regulations, ICE is notified only if a detainee has a judicial warrant and has recently been convicted of a violent crime.

It remains unclear whether Posada-Hernandez will be reported to ICE. Records show he has been deported multiple times, raising further concerns.

DHS officials highlighted the severity of the situation, calling on New York’s leadership not to release someone they describe as a “serial offender” facing murder charges, while also urging prayers for Williams’ family.
