NYC mayoral candidate Mamdani faces scrutiny over campaign advisers

NYC Socialist Candidate Zohran Mamdani Gains Momentum

The rise of Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate in New York City, is a notable development among activists who champion anti-Israel perspectives alongside socialist ideologies. His criticism of former President Trump’s immigration policies is well-known, and he has formed a team of advisers to support his campaign.

Among these advisers is Murad Awaude, the president of New York Immigrants, an organization long committed to dismantling national support for detention and deportation. Awaude emphasizes that providing taxpayer-funded medical care to undocumented immigrants is a legal right. He has openly supported the notion that seeking asylum at the border is a fundamental legal right.

Democrats vulnerable to backlash are now tying themselves to Mamdani and his political ally, Hakeem Jeffries. Interestingly, NYIC, which has a close association with the Vera Institute for Justice, appears to be benefiting financially from contracts related to immigrant support initiatives funded by the Biden administration. Additionally, NYIC has received significant funding from the expansive George Soros network.

Soros is also associated with Patrick Gaspard, a key adviser to Mamdani. Gaspard, who advised Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and later led the Democratic National Committee, currently heads the Center for American Progress. His ties to Soros date back years, and he was known for his support of Soros’ Open Society Foundation.

This year, Gaspard criticized the influence of extremist groups, asserting that future generations would recognize his contributions to democracy. However, he faced scrutiny for his connection to Soros, who has been accused of financially backing radical groups promoting social justice agendas.

Mamdani has publicly disputed the “Communist” label assigned to him by detractors, although he remains aligned with activists labeled as radical. Cea Weaver, a housing advocate within Mamdani’s inner circle, has connections to the American democratic socialist movement and has faced significant pushback over her associations in New York’s housing sector.

Weaver has a controversial history, having worked with groups linked to extreme leftist ideologies, including the Communist Party of the United States. The implications of her past comments have led to criticism, suggesting that her political leanings are far from moderate.

Furthermore, Mamdani’s anti-Israel rhetoric has drawn fire due to his past writings in a university publication and the backgrounds of some of his advisers. Activist Faiza Ali, part of his inner circle, previously worked for the American Council on Islamic Relations, which has faced accusations regarding its ties to terrorist organizations. Statements made in the wake of conflicts have further intensified scrutiny of Ali’s connections.

In a troubling twist, GOP Senator Tom Cotton aimed to strip Ali’s nonprofit status, underlining her associations with figures like Linda Sarsour, known for her vocal anti-Israel stance and controversial past comments. Sarsour has faced allegations of anti-Semitism for her remarks and her calls for various forms of resistance against political opponents, including President Trump.

Campaign Manager Maya Handa is noted as part of a growing circle enveloping Mamdani, having served as a senior advisor for Congressman Jamal Bowman, who has attracted controversy for his own anti-Israel sentiments. Mamdani’s senior adviser, Morris Katz, has openly criticized Israel on social media while attempting to engage with pro-Israel voters.

Overall, Mamdani’s campaign and the intricate web of alliances he’s forming may signal a shift in New York City’s political landscape, but they’re fraught with intense scrutiny over the radical affiliations and controversial stances of his advisers.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Mamdani campaign for further comments.
