Mamdani Responds to Trump’s Funding Threat Ahead of Election
Mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani took a bold stance in his speech early Monday, directly addressing President Donald Trump’s remarks about potentially cutting federal funding to New York City if Mamdani wins on Tuesday.
In an impressive show of support, Mamdani led a march at dawn across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall. Flanked by supporters, local officials, and Attorney General Letitia James, he affirmed his commitment to pushing back against Trump’s administration.
“What we’re observing in cities and states nationwide highlights the need for us to not only use our voice but also leverage the courts to ensure municipalities receive their due funding,” Mamdani said. “Once this election wraps up, I’ll work to unite City Hall and prepare not just for Trump’s threats, but also to tackle the affordability crisis that’s leaving a quarter of New Yorkers in poverty.”
During an interview with CBS’ Norah O’Donnell on “60 Minutes,” Trump stated if Mamdani becomes mayor, it would be challenging for him to allocate substantial funds to New York.
Mamdani has experienced consistent criticism from Trump since defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary earlier this year. The president has referred to him as a “100% communist lunatic” and labeled him “my little communist,” which Mamdani firmly disputes.
After winning the Democratic nomination over the summer, Mamdani organized a week-long “Five Boroughs Against Trump” campaign throughout the city.
“Honestly, I’m not fond of Cuomo, but if it’s a choice between a problematic Democrat and a communist, I’d pick the problematic Democrat any day,” Trump remarked on “60 Minutes.”
Mamdani highlighted Trump’s comments as tacit support for Cuomo, noting Trump has yet to endorse the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, also on the ballot.
“Late last night, Andrew Cuomo received the endorsement of Donald Trump,” Mamdani claimed. “If I become mayor, our city risks slipping further into a darkness that’s already forcing many to leave and inhibiting working people from living dignified lives.”
In response, a spokesperson for Cuomo, Rich Azzopardi, asserted that Mamdani is “lying” about Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo.
Azzopardi further emphasized, “There’s only one candidate in this race with a proven track record of standing against Trump when it has mattered for New York, and that’s Andrew Cuomo. We won’t let anyone twist the narrative as we near Election Day.”
Mamdani, standing outside City Hall, vowed to establish a government to replace Trump’s administration. “We’re seeing Trump level these threats against our city and our leaders regularly,” he stated. “What our movement offers is a refusal to surrender to these kinds of intimidation, drawing on inspirations around us to keep fighting for justice in our city and state.”
In addition to Attorney General James, recently facing her legal troubles, Mamdani commended her for demonstrating the fortitude expected from elected officials: “Courage to hold everyone accountable.”
James has been engaged in legal battles against the Trump Organization since 2019, and last year, both Trump and his business were found liable for civil fraud. She has initiated several lawsuits against the Trump administration this year, seeking to reject executive orders and access federal funding.
Pointing to Trump’s rhetoric, Mamdani remarked, “Trump may act as if he’s the one deciding this, but this is money owed to our city. This is money we should rightfully collect.” As Election Day approaches, Mamdani aims to position himself as the leading candidate ready to contend with Trump, while attempting to connect Cuomo to the president.
“We’ve recognized for some time that Andrew Cuomo is essentially Donald Trump’s puppet in this race. What we didn’t see coming was him becoming Trump’s parrot in these last few days,” Mamdani asserted.
The White House has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the situation.
