NYC politician Joseph Addabbo makes push to legalize remote bets on blackjack, poker

The possibility of legalizing online gaming is once again under discussion in New York.

Given the success of mobile sports betting, state Sen. Joseph Addabbo (D-Queens) Re-introduced law Allows remote betting on casino staples like blackjack, poker, and craps.

“This is a good bill,” said Joe Addabbo, chairman of the state Senate Gaming Committee. he told NY1 on Friday night. “We've gotten a lot of input from a lot of individuals, but it's a starting point. This is a starting point, and we hope that we can have discussions like this in the budgeting process.”

Addabbo said iGaming and iLottery, also included in his proposal, plan to generate about $1 billion a year.

Addabbo's 2023 version of the bill did not make it to consideration in the state's current fiscal budget. State Rep. Gary Pretlow (D-Mount Vernon) reportedly plans to introduce a version of the new bill in Congress at a later date.

Addabbo said much of the local iGaming market has already gone to neighboring states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where it's legal. He said his proposal could help New York City address its projected budget deficit, as the tax rate could be 30.5% and the license fee could be $2 million.
