NYCFC striker Alonso Martinez sidelined with knee injury during playoff defeat

NYCFC Faces Tough Setback

New York City FC is facing a challenging situation.

Star forward Alonso Martinez sustained a knee injury while on international duty with Costa Rica, as announced by NYCFC on Saturday. The specifics were a bit unclear, but reports from Friday night suggested that Martinez might be out for eight to nine months due to a torn ACL, which is really worrying for the team.

This injury occurred during a World Cup qualifier against Haiti. NYCFC mentioned that Alonso is back in New York for evaluation, with more updates expected soon.

In a heartfelt message on his Instagram Story, Martinez expressed gratitude to fans for their support. He wrote, “I cannot express my gratitude enough. God bless you! Thank you to the doctors of the federation and my club for their support from day one. With God’s help, we will come back even stronger!”

This injury is a significant setback for both Miami and NYCFC, especially since Costa Rica is trying to qualify for the upcoming World Cup. For NYCFC, Martinez was their leading scorer, netting 17 goals this season and two more during the playoffs against Charlotte FC.

Compounding the situation, NYCFC had already been without player Andres Perea in the semifinals against the Philadelphia Union due to a broken leg, which he had surgery for after a previous match.

Looking ahead, NYCFC is scheduled to face the Union next Sunday, which will certainly be a tough match without their star player.
