Long Lines for Gourmet Grocery Opening in Tribeca

“I’m freezing and really hungry,” a young woman remarked to the Post, her teeth chattering as she stood in line for food early Friday morning.

The woman was among the many who flocked to Tribeca during rush hour, waiting in extensive lines that stretched for blocks to get something to eat.

As the clock approached 11 a.m., a crowd eagerly awaited the launch of Meadow Lane, a gourmet grocery store by TikTok star Sammy Nussdorf, located at 355 Greenwich Street. Shoppers had their sights set on overpriced items like $15 organic chicken nuggets and $16 bone broth.

Ironically, the grand opening of Meadow Lane comes at a time when many are grappling with rising costs of living, which has spurred figures like Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdani to enter the mayoral race amid discussions about cutting SNAP benefits. Yet, outside this upscale store, the scene was lively, and the excitement online suggested that New Yorkers are as hungry as ever for expensive, trendy food.

The store’s interior resembles a chic film set, with fresh flowers and artfully arranged food enhancing the shopping experience.

Some dedicated fans lined up as early as 5 a.m. after following Nussdorf’s journey on TikTok, where he documented the store’s creation.

One ecstatic shopper likened the experience to winning a golden ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Inside, instead of candy, they found items priced so high that they could rival more established upscale retailers like Zabar’s.

For example, there were $14 tortilla chips, $12 grapes, and even a $625 container of Siberian caviar. Of course, these items could be found for much less elsewhere, yet the allure of the experience seemed to overshadow the price tags.

Many in line didn’t seem concerned with bargains; they were ready to spend large sums on premium foods and experiences. Isabella Newnham, 26, expressed, “We love food, so we spend money on it. That’s just New York.” Joy Papazian, 22, added that even basic items like milk have seen steep price increases, prompting many to seek out quality over cost.

Fresh juices from the store were also a hit, with patrons willing to pay without a second thought. Younger shoppers noted they would splurge on food while being frugal with other purchases, like clothing.

The store offered an array of grab-and-go options like a $21 Chinese chicken salad and a $24 miso salmon bowl, quickly drawing interest from the crowd. Nussdorf, who gained fame through his viral TikTok videos, has been clear about his vision for Meadow Lane, which surfaced after the closure of luxury brand Dean & DeLuca.

People were clearly excited—lining up early felt less like waiting for groceries and more like a celebration. Once inside, they were met with stunning displays, fresh flowers, and an overall atmosphere that felt extravagant.

Advertising account manager Sydney Savage, 22, spent over $260 on a few items, thoroughly impressed with her purchases. Although some items, like the highly touted $15 chicken nuggets, exceeded expectations, others fell flat.

Despite the high prices, Nussdorf believes there’s something for everyone at Meadow Lane, including affordable coffee and pastries. His aim is to turn this Instagram and TikTok sensation into a go-to neighborhood spot for those willing to spend.

“It’s really for everyone,” he said, though perhaps more accurately, for those who can afford the luxury.
