NYPD Captain Disciplined After Criticizing the Mayor as a 'Manufactured Outrage Machine'

NYPD Inspector Loses Command After Outburst Against Mayor

A captain within the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has recently lost his command due to a verbal tirade directed at Mayor Zoran Mamdani.

Captain James G. Wilson, who has served for two decades, has been removed from his role as deputy commander at the 94th Precinct in Greenpoint. Instead, he has been reassigned to the NYP’s 911 communication center in the Bronx. Some Republicans are backing him, suggesting that his remarks reflect a crucial part of political dialogue.

This incident occurred on May 2 during a protest outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Bushwick, where activists gathered after immigration officials brought undocumented Nigerian immigrants for medical care. According to reports, during the protest, Wilson was seen smiling while he called Mayor Mamdani “utter nonsense” and “an embarrassment,” asserting that he was “not my mayor” and labeling all Democrats as “wastes of humanity.”

The backlash was swift. City Council member Joanne Arriola remarked that if Wilson had criticized then-President Donald Trump instead, he would have likely been hailed as a hero and celebrated, whereas now it seems a “nefarious machine” has mobilized to silence dissent. Similarly, City Council Minority Leader David Carr pointed out inconsistencies in how speech regulations are applied.

According to the NYPD’s Administrative Guide, on-duty officers are prohibited from publicly endorsing candidates or voicing personal opinions about political issues or candidates without prior approval from the police chief.

Retired NYPD Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce shared another perspective on this rule, stating that when officers wear their uniform, they essentially become representatives of the police department, which complicates matters when they make partisan statements.

Frustrations towards Mayor Mamdani have been brewing for some time, with complaints related to his previous calls to defund the police and his comments on an incident at Washington Square Park in February that resulted in injuries to two officers.

In response to Wilson’s transfer, Mamdani claimed he had no influence over the decision and clarified that it aligned with NYPD regulations, having seen the video but not participating in the disciplinary process. The investigation regarding Wilson is still ongoing.
