NYPD commish Jessica Tisch admits NYC ‘need more cops’ — here’s how she plans to attract new recruits

The NYPD has launched three efforts to strengthen New York's highest reduced rank, including reviving the time-run requirements and declines in university credit conditions.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tish said Wednesday that changes would be needed to hire more officers as the department's ranks have been at risk in recent years.

“We need more cops. I'm not going to sugar coat it,” Tish told the Association for Better New York Events.

“It wasn't long ago that people waited years for people to be called to join the academy,” Tisch said. “Now we are pleading with people to actually take the exam. When they pass, we are in a hurry to hire them as soon as possible. So what happened? ?”

With this change, the department is seeking to reduce the minimum number of university credits required to enroll in the Police Academy to 24, rather than the current 60.

Police Brass, one of the last major police forces in the country with university credit requirements, will disqualify 29%, or 2,275 applicants in 2023 alone, due to standard He said he was forced to do so.

The department currently has 34,475 uniformed officers, from 40,200 in 2000.

“Public safety and justice are prerequisites for prosperity and we continue to see a record decline in crime across cities, so we are all in our power to put more officers on the streets. Former NYPD captain Adams, who knows he has to take bold and decisive action to ensure he is doing so, said in a statement Wednesday.
