Heart-pounding footage shows the moment highly trained NYPD detectives scaled a glass wall to rescue a distraught woman on the edge of a 54-story Manhattan rooftop last week.
The dramatic rescue of the 33-year-old woman took place last Wednesday at a Midtown building on East 29th Street.
When members of the New York Police Department’s Emergency Unit (ESU) responded, they were initially separated from the woman by a glass partition, and police were forced to use a rope to reach the victim, the body reported. This was revealed on camera footage.
According to police, the ESU team received a call at around 3:10 p.m. about a woman who appeared to be attempting to jump from a ledge in a 54-story building.
Video posted online by the NYPD shows at least two ESU officers holding the woman’s left arm through a 7-foot-tall fence.
The video then cuts to a police officer on a rope jumping over a glass wall and joining another ESU member who was already helping the woman on a ledge.
Two ESU detectives then hoisted the woman over a glass wall while police waited on the other side to grab her, the footage shows. One of her rescuers reassured her, “It’s okay.”
The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital, authorities said.
“When people need help, they call the police,” the NYPD said in a social media post. “When police need help, they call ESU.”
