New York City police rescued a man who was about to jump from the iconic Brooklyn Bridge just after 3 p.m. Saturday.
Law enforcement sources said of new york post Police rushed to the scene after receiving a report that a man had climbed onto the outside of the building.
The man is believed to have told officers he was going to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge and gave one of them the middle finger. Photos taken at the scene show the barefoot man at one point hanging Get off the bridge while holding it with your hands.
Witnesses said the man appeared “disturbed.” As he pulled himself up from hanging from the bridge, one of the emergency services unit (ESU) officers was able to grab him and pull him back from the dangerous position. Crews took him into custody at 4:22 p.m.
Westbound traffic was stopped to allow crews to gain access to the man, who has not been charged in the incident.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychological evaluation.
According to the New York City website, the Brooklyn Bridge link Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights. It is used by an average of more than 107,000 vehicles, 32,000 pedestrians and 4,000 cyclists each day.
The Brooklyn Bridge was designed by John A. Roebling. Construction began in 1869 and was completed in 1883. At the time, this bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. The Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River and connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Because the bridge is higher than the East River and the coast is relatively low, the rest of the bridge slopes to ground level and extends well inland on both sides of the river.
Breitbart News reported that in September, singer Jon Bon Jovi accosted a woman who was reportedly in a “moment of crisis” as she attempted to jump off a bridge in Nashville, Tennessee. The same thing happened.
In October, Seattle police officers rescued a man in mental health crisis after falling eight meters onto train tracks. According to Breitbart News, officers on the platform below ran to him and narrowly pulled him away from an oncoming train.
Seattle Police Department said, “Thanks to the rescue efforts of first responders, the man survived.''
