NYPD Overtime Reduction and Budget Cuts Under Mayor Mamdani

The NYPD has received new instructions to scale back on overtime hours, marking just the start of rising public concerns under Mayor Zoran Mamdani. During his campaign, Mamdani aimed to do away with the police department’s entire overtime budget, as reported by the Post.

According to several sources, officers have been asked to cut their overtime by nine to eleven hours next month as part of broader cost-reduction strategies.

It’s still unclear if these limitations will extend beyond February, which is the shortest month, or if additional cuts might follow.

Officials clarified that the directive wasn’t issued from City Hall and came about quickly, especially considering there are currently few major events that typically necessitate extra hours.

“This is just basic management,” noted Delaney Kemper, chief spokesperson for the NYPD. “It’s logical to reduce overtime during the coldest, shortest months when major events requiring extra staffing are at a low.” She mentioned that summer would provide plenty of opportunities for overtime as events pick up again.

However, police officers expressed concern that these cuts are happening barely three weeks into Mamdani’s new administration. The mayor had previously signaled intentions for significant budget cuts to the police force, including the elimination of overtime funding altogether.

One officer humorously remarked to the Post, “The mama dummies have struck again.” Another voiced, “This isn’t surprising, but it’s really just the beginning.” Comments include thoughts that cutting the overtime is a logical move for someone looking to reform the police budget.

New York City has reportedly reduced its budget deficit by around $12 billion. Meanwhile, the new mayor has promised several initiatives that will cost billions and will be funded by taxpayers. One of these plans is to reallocate more than $1 billion from the police’s overtime budget to support a proposed community safety agency. This new agency is expected to handle mental health consultations on behalf of the police around the clock.

By the close of the fiscal year on June 30, the NYPD’s overtime budget is anticipated to reach about $1.1 billion.
