The New York City Police Department has charged a woman with stabbing an on-duty USPS employee to death Thursday afternoon.

A woman identified as Jaya Cruz, 24, was charged with second-degree murder after allegedly stabbing and slashing a postal worker on duty inside a Harlem deli.

The victim, now identified as Ray Hodges, 36, was taken to New York City Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police said the attack began after an argument between two customers.

The weapon was recovered. However, it has not been specified.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) said in a statement that the postal worker is assigned to Manhattan and is cooperating with the New York Police Department.

“USPIS considers issues related to the safety and health of postal workers to be a top priority. We are working diligently with the New York City Police Department on this investigation,” the statement said.
