Obama Comments on Threat at Correspondents’ Dinner
On Sunday, former President Barack Obama emphasized that the details behind the motive of an armed individual who allegedly attempted to attack the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner were still unclear. This statement came shortly after the suspect’s manifesto was made public by various news outlets.
Cole Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrance, California, is set to appear in court on Monday facing charges for using a firearm in a violent crime and for assaulting a federal officer. This information became available around 5:15 p.m. on the same day, about six hours following the New York Post’s publication of Allen’s manifesto that morning.
In his post, Obama remarked, “While we do not yet know the details of the motive behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, it is incumbent on all of us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy. It is also a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice that America’s secret agents demonstrate every day. I’m grateful to them, and I’m also relieved that the agent who was shot is safe.”
President Obama did not provide an immediate response when contacted for further comment.
In his manifesto, sent to family just minutes before he reportedly exchanged gunfire with U.S. Secret Service agents, Allen expressed a desire to target senior officials from the Trump administration, with the exception of FBI Director Kash Patel.
Allen stated, “I will no longer allow pedophiles, rapists, and traitors to paint their crimes on my hands. To be honest, I haven’t felt motivated for a while, but this is my first real opportunity to act.” He indicated that officials would be “prioritized from highest to lowest” in his planned assault.
He also mentioned, “If I had to, I would reach my target through almost everyone here because most of them choose to attend the speeches of pedophiles, rapists, and traitors, and are therefore accomplices. But I really hope that doesn’t happen.”
