Obama Accuses Trump Administration of Targeting Ilhan Omar

Former President Barack Obama has criticized the Trump administration, claiming it is using the federal government to go after political opponents. This statement came in defense of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who is currently under investigation regarding her citizenship status.

Obama alleged that the administration aims to revoke Omar’s citizenship and deport her for her criticisms of President Donald Trump, cautioning that such actions could create a troubling precedent. “It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama expressed on X. “But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”

His comments followed reports of federal agents searching Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., as part of a criminal inquiry into her immigration history. Sources suggested investigations are looking into whether Omar or her father committed any fraud when she became a U.S. citizen years ago.

In his defense of Omar, Obama noted that she came to the U.S. with her father at the age of 12 and became a citizen automatically when her father was naturalized at age 17. He further asserted that the investigation is based on an “unsubstantiated theory” claiming that Omar was actually 18 at the time, which would have required separate citizenship application.

“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,” Obama wrote, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House and the Department of Homeland Security for responses to Obama’s claims. Trump, for his part, has denied any personal involvement in the investigation, stating that it is a matter for the Justice Department.

“I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me,” Trump remarked.

Obama also cited other instances where the Trump administration has allegedly targeted perceived political rivals, mentioning actions against figures like New York’s attorney general and members of the Federal Reserve. He warned that the willingness of any administration to intimidate opponents should concern all Americans, regardless of their opinions on Omar’s policies.

“If this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same,” he cautioned.
